I’m guessing these are times when years from now we will remember where we were when we learned that President Trump had COVID-19. It was 1 am in the morning and I was up as I wrote at the time.
It got me to thinking what was a similar circumstance to this in our past history? That would be, I think the attempted assassination of President Reagan in March of 1981. He was leaving a speech he made at the Washington Hilton when a young deranged man John Hinkley shot him and tried to kill him. He was injured badly by gunshot wounds but survived.
I was working at a relatively new job at Brunswick Hospital and word went through the complex rather quickly as it happened in mid afternoon. I don’t recall feeling as though the President was in mortal danger even though he went through a rather difficult surgical procedure to repair the damage done by the ballet. My recollection from all those years ago is that we new pretty quickly he would survive. It wasn’t until years later that we learned he was wounded much worse than we knew at the time.
This is kind of the situation now with President Trump. As I write this the doctors can’t say for sure how bad this virus might get for him. We’ve heard that he has a moderate infection but the doctors in their morning briefing today we giving a much more optimistic report. We only learned later that he did have some breathing and blood oxygen level issues. So we don’t know exactly what’s going on. I just hope the powers that be tell the American people the truth. We can handle it. And I hope he recovers and is100% back to normal. And I hope he finally tells the country to follow the science and the public health doctors directives.
