I think 2020 is going to be remembered as a pivotal year in American and World history. It will be remembered as the year of the pandemic where over 100,000 Americans died as a result of the virus.
And it will also be remembered for the death of George Floyd murdered by a Minneapolis police officer who choked him to death with a knee to his throat held there for close to nine minutes. A black man was killed by a white policeman with no regard for his life. This act of systemic racism was the so-called straw that broke the camels back. This total disregard for life brought to light the plight of the black man and women in this country. The dispirit plight has been there since the founding of our country. And while the racist nature of our country has improved, we still have a long way to go as a country. We have an opportunity to move forward and we as a nation must take advantage of this moment in time.
We moved an inch forward when we abolished slavery and another inch forward when we ended Jim Crow and another inch when separate but equal was outlawed. This is one of those times when another move forward to end racism is required. Let’s see if 2020 is one of those times, when we move forward, when we end police racism when we end health inequality or maybe when we improve our education system and make it less discriminatory. We can only pray.
